Don’t Take Insurance – Why I won’t! I am writing this article to explain why I don’t take insurance for my sessions. This is a question I get frequently from prospective clients. There are several reasons. First of all I am NOT a licensed therapist and don’t promote myself as such. I am a licensed minister and qualified to be a spiritual counselor. Only licensed therapists can file insurance reimbursements, and in order to do so they are required to “diagnose” their clients. These diagnoses go on the client’s permanent health record and are often times subjective and incorrect.

Some of the diagnoses may cause someone to lose a job or ma limit them in a particular career choice. Because I have my Masters Degree in Mental Health Counseling, I am educated in knowing what qualifies someone with a Mental Illness, and I will refer my clients when I feel they need more than what I can give them as a spiritual counselor and energy practitioner. There are other reasons for doing the work I do, it’s quicker and I believe more effective than what traditional counseling offers. My clients are doing so much better in less than half the time, which equals a savings to them, in many ways. I also educate my clients in how to handle their feelings and triggers on their own, which empowers them, and saves them costly visits of an insurance co-payment. Many insurance policies require a 40% copayment for a therapist’s visit which, over time, adds up. Also, many policies have deductibles which include several office visits prior to using the actual insurance. I believe in the long run, cost effectively, my clients get the money’s worth without having to utilize any insurance and diagnose a mental illness they may not have just to get the insurance to pay for it.
